But that will not change this hard truth. Purists may argue that this is not good for democracy and rightly so. That is a harsh reality and the opposition knows it. Given the current political environment in the country, it may be prudent to rule out any one party and its leader dethroning the BJP and Mr Modi in 2024. For a party that has ruled the country for nearly six decades since 1947, this is indeed pathetic. Today, the party has only 52 MPs in the Lok Sabha, a figure that does not even meet the 10% criterion for their leader to be designated as Leader of Opposition (LOP). It has resulted in their sharp decline, particularly since 2009 when the party President installed a pliant Dr Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister instead of Mr Pranab Mukherjee. Congress is a prime example of this syndrome. Political parties cannot become viable oppositions or alternatives if they put family loyalties above national interests. Does India boast of any such option today? At the national level, all opposition political parties have failed the nation in this regard with Congress being the biggest culprit. In any democracy, a healthy and alternate option is always welcome.
